RAID rebuilds just crashed the machine.

Repeatedly.

Jared was kind enough to unplug one of the drives for me, so I'm now running in degraded mode.

Thinks appear to be OK (for now).

I've got 2 new disks on order, and I'll be driving over to Jared's to install them when they arrive in the next couple of days.

So I noticed this in dmesg:

AppleRAID::completeRAIDRequest - error 0xe00002d6 detected for set "Untitled RAID Set 1" (89AE8501-EE3F-464A-8D85-4FBA55555568), member 0753BC13-0D12-47B8-88D6-464F0B9880EB, set byte offset = 153894912.
AppleRAID::recover() member 0753BC13-0D12-47B8-88D6-464F0B9880EB from set "Untitled RAID Set 1" (89AE8501-EE3F-464A-8D85-4FBA55555568) has been marked offline.
AppleRAID::restartSet - restarting set "Untitled RAID Set 1" (89AE8501-EE3F-464A-8D85-4FBA55555568).

and then checked ...

[gandalf:~] dluke% diskutil checkRAID
RAID SETS

Name: Untitled RAID Set 1
Unique ID: 89AE8501-EE3F-464A-8D85-4FBA55555568

# Device Node UUID Status

1 disk1s3 06979115-A2A4-4326-B9D2-1EC253E9AC60 Online

d'oh!

I couldn't pull up the smart status for that drive either.

So I went to reboot the machine, hoping that it would come back up and either let me rebuild the arrray, or just start rebuilding it.

It didn't want to come back up normally, so I hit the power on the UPS and it did.

Now I see the much happier:

[gandalf:~] dluke% diskutil checkRAID
RAID SETS

----------------------------------------------------------------------

SMART status looks OK too:

% smartctl -H disk0

SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED

Hopefully I don't need to buy a new drive and install it in jared's basement ...

I updated to the latest dovecot release last night, and I think that that killed geeklair.net (many times) today.

I've updated it with the HFS+ avoid hardlinks patch (from darwinports) and I _think_ it will be ok now. This patch is being considered for inclusion in the next dovecot 1.0rc release (8).

Also, since sendmail has developed an annoying habit of not logging to syslog() after a little while (sending sendmail SIGHUP makes it log again for a few minutes, but the problem always comes back), I've finally switched MTAs.

geeklair.net is now running postfix. I think everything is working, but I'm sure I could have missed something.

Let me know if you notice any issues/problems.

The ACLU page is here.

In my opinion, it's well past time for impeachment.

danger + opportunity ≠ crisis

"The jī of wēijī, in fact, means something like "incipient moment; crucial point (when something begins or changes)." Thus, a wēijī is indeed a genuine crisis, a dangerous moment, a time when things start to go awry. A wēijī indicates a perilous situation when one should be especially wary. It is not a juncture when one goes looking for advantages and benefits."

I suppose next he'll teach us all how to square a circle.
